Happy Valentine’s Day My Friends,

Many of us have wondered the proverbial “What is love?” Without a doubt, when we don’t love ourselves, we do not know love! Some of us find love in our pets, children, partners, friends and most importantly within ourselves. One of my witty, fabulous, single friends has taught me, you do not need a mate to know love. She had boldly thrown herself a birthday party and had a cake made that read, “I LOVE ME”. We all had a good chuckle. In actual fact, I think that was a huge sign to me that we need more self love.

How can we love ourselves? Feed ourselves the best quality food, do not settle for less when we can do better and treat our body like a temple. A book that moved me once said, at your death, how would you like to be remembered? All of a sudden your priorities come bounding to the forefront of your mind! Most of our priorities have to do with love, our families and friends.

Because I love my job and healing, I have a gift for you and your friends. Below is a FREE HEALTH PASS for an electrodermal screening for organ stress or weakness. As many of you recall, I have always stressed that we should not wait for symptoms to arrive as any ill-health process is well underway by the time symptoms show up. My treat is extended to other family members or close friends (please tell them to mention your name). There are so many people out there who don’t feel as well as they could if they only knew what to do. Please call the office to book your complimentary session and bring in a copy of this coupon:

Yours in health,
Heather Caruso

How to Live a Long and Healthy Life!

Being a Homeopath in practice for almost a decade, I have been exposed to some great research. I have surveyed research of human nature, psychology, homeopathy, nutrition and spirituality. In brief here are some facts that have been found to increase longevity are as follows:

1. A “What Me Worry Attitude” increases your lifespan!

  • According to research of 941 men and women, people who tend to be more optimistic were 77% less likely to die of a heart attack then pessimists. This was even without accounting for age, weight and smoking!
  • Having a degree in psychology, I have also learned that social support improves the lifespan. People who have connections to their community and a good social network tend to live longer then those who do not.

2. Beware of Heart Attack Mondays!
Did you know that dreading going to work on Monday is hazardous to your health? The rise in stress hormones can increase blood pressure and put fatal stress on your heart? According research 20 percent more heart attacks happen on Monday! Blood pressure readings are higher on Monday as well. In Britain, the leading cause of death is heart disease, affecting 300,000 people per year. One out of every three die before they make it to the hospital. An addition to the old adage, “Get a job”, should read “Get a job you love!”

3. Optimal insulin levels lead to a longer life.
People who have high insulin levels age more quickly, have a higher rate of heart disease, cancer, dementia and earlier death rates. High insulin is a devil that we cannot see! The key is to watch your waistline and eat a low glycemic and low fat diet. Eat a wide variety of fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, fish and legumes.

4. Supplements for a long life:

  • Fish oil: reduce inflammation in the joints, improve brain function and cardiovascular health. It has also been toted as an immune booster
  • Ground Flaxseed: prevents colon, breast and prostate cancer
  • Grapeseed Extract: prevents breast cancer, improves the integrity of the blood vessels and heart and reduces wrinkle formation
  • Calcium and Magnesium, 2:1 ratio: low levels of calcium are linked to osteoporosis, colon cancer and breast cancer. In studies of dieting rats (poor beggars!), the addition of calcium helped with further weight loss.
  • Vitamin D: has been in the news a lot this year. It has been linked to improving seasonal affective disorder (depression during the winter months). It is said to promote bone strength and is good for prostate, lung, breast and colon cancer. It also prevents the development of multiple sclerosis and aids in immune modulation in type I diabetics.

5. Watching your waistline is a good idea:
A man’s waist size may is a strong indicator for heart disease and diabetes. Abdominal fat, called central or apple shaped obesity, is a strong risk factor for developing type II diabetes, which leads to heart disease, cancer and early aging. Research of 27,270 men over 13 years found that those with larger waist (40 inches or higher) were twelve times more likely to develop diabetes. (www.lef.org)

6. Exercise increases lifespan and makes your butt look good!
One hour of exercise 3-4 times a week, including vigorous walking, running, swimming or other sports are a good way to release stress and promote cardiovascular health.

The Framingham Study
A survey of the effects of exercise on mortality in 1,404 women, aged 50-to-74, in the famous Framingham study was reported in the American Heart Journal in Nov 1994. The scientists found that after 16 years of follow-up, 319 (23%) of the women had died, but that the mortality rate was lowest in women who had exercised most vigorously. They found that this increase in longevity was not due to reduced cardiovascular mortality. (www.lef.org)
