The Ten Commandments According to Heather

©Heather Caruso 2008

Many people ask me what supplements I am taking, how I combat stress and what I eat. When I go to the grocery store and I see a client it amuses me when they look in my cart or run from me so I don’t see what they are buying! I don’t believe that you have to be a teetotaller, a vegan or raw food specialist to be healthy. The old adage goes, “everything in moderation”. The French enjoy greater health and they drink wine, eat higher fat foods and smoke. I am never a fan of smoking, however, I understand how they can stay healthy and will explain that further herein. Here is my top ten list of health tips that have worked for me and my family.

Number 1: Thou shalt eat your fruit and veggies!
Make sure that your fruit and vegetable intake is at least half of your daily intake of foods. Whenever I see someone eating starches and proteins only, I assume that they are constipated, their cholesterol is high and their energy is low. I am almost always right. If you do not like veggies, you can take greens supplements in a capsule form. However, the real deal is always better for you.

Number 2: Eat enough fibre!
Many people picture eating fibrous cereals as similar to eating a wicker patio set. (Some cereals I have ingested are for sure!) Our bowels are a holding tank for our body’s waste. Our waste is not only what we eat and drink but our manufactured toxins such as hormones, acids, alcohols and cholesterol. There are environmental toxins that we absorb such as pesticides, heavy metals and pollution. A popular revision of the old proverb is “You are what you eat and don’t excrete.” We are exposed to many toxins every day and we must ensure our organs work effectively to eliminate these poisons.
Some experts recommend one bowel movement per meal and others once a day. It is true that some people are different and only go once a day. If your norm is only twice per week, you are at risk. Waste sits in your bowel and causes fermentation and toxic build up. It is amazing what a toxic build up can occur with those who are chronically constipated. Many other diseases linked to constipation are diverticulitis, arthritis, candida, hypothyroidism, emotional disorders, tumours, hemorrhoids, dysbiosis (which is an imbalance of bad and good bacteria in the intestinal tract) and cancer. A test called “Live Cell Testing” used at the clinic is quite amazing. You can see a seven-minute demonstration of it on Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VvHOqEjG6a4

It is quite amazing what kinds of signs of dysbiosis one can see in the blood of those who are chronically constipated.

Number 3: Drink enough water!
Drink enough water. Many of us on the run say we can’t stop to pee when we are working. Getting enough fluids helps with detoxification, improves skin integrity, helps with bowel movements and of course prevents dehydration. Drinking 6 to 8 glasses per day is a good start.

Number 4: Don’t use any dishes that are not ceramic, glass or stainless steel!
Plastics have been shown to be a xenoestrogen, which is a type of chemical estrogen that causes hormonal cancers and early feminization of children of both genders. Plastic from food products and water bottles leach chemicals into the water we drink. Buy a stainless steel bottle from a camping supply store or your local health food store. Do not cook anything using plastics.

Number 5: If you eat or drink foods that are taboo, enjoy them and let it go!
This is where the French surpass our mentality. They would enjoy a glass of wine or piece of chocolate and savour it. When I was growing up, we seemed to have a mentality of good food and bad food. Like many women, I tend to gain weight if I do not watch what I am eating. The problem is that with the sensation of deprivation comes a feeling of wanting to indulge and subsequently go onto the great famine again. This stunts one’s metabolism and causes your body to retain weight, because it doesn’t know when it will eat again. Enjoy your glass of wine on the weekend. Have a nice dessert occasionally. Don’t lament over calories. It is what it is. If you do enjoy the luxuries in life, enjoy them in moderation. If you have 21 meals per week and eat poorly for one of them, it is the majority of meals that count. Everything in moderation!

Number 6: When you are stressed, you need a change or may need a hand thinking clearly.
Many of us have coping mechanisms for stress. Most stress is usually caused by faulty thinking or uncomfortable life circumstances. Issues at hand can be dealt with clearly and objectively using the technique called “The Work”. It is a questioning of yourself, where you ask four questions and turn it around. The questions are: Is it true? Can you absolutely know that it is true? How do you feel when you think those thoughts that it is true? Can you see a reason to drop that thought? Then you turn it around. For more information on this fabulous technique, go to www.thework.com. It was discovered by Byron Katie, who wrote the book called “Loving What Is”.
Usually stress is self manufactured, sometimes to clear it, you have to ask yourself some tough questions. It is a process. However, living in peace is better than living in turmoil. The ways I reduce stress are to do “The Work”, go for lunch or to a show with a good friend, exercise, meditate, enjoy a funny show and take time for gratitude. This too shall pass is one great saying! Guelph Reiki Master Barbara McKell is hosting a meditation class on Mondays in the Fall. Go to her website for more information about it: www.soulconnection.ca

Number 7: Have a job you love and you will never work another day in your life!
In one of my past newsletters, I had mentioned that Monday is the number one day for heart attacks due to a rise in blood pressure. The old adage to “get a job” is now “get a job you love”! It is true that if you do not like your job, you are less productive. Returning to work causes stress and these stress hormones can cause increases in blood pressure.

Number 8: Take your vitamins faithfully!
Given the quality of our soil and our imported produce, I recommend taking a multi vitamin daily. Much of our produce is shipped in from other countries where it sits in transit for a time losing its nutrients. By taking a multi vitamin, it ensures you are getting your daily requirements. I also always take a calcium, magnesium and vitamin D supplement. Low levels of these nutrients are linked to osteoporosis, intestinal and breast cancer. I also take an essential fatty acid that includes fish oil and flaxseed oil. This is good for skin, hair, immune system and cardiovascular health. Constitutional remedies are homeopathic remedies suited to one’s emotional and physical symptoms. It helps to stimulate one’s healing mechanism gently and safely. Many other supplements and homeopathics are useful for different health concerns. However, these basics work for most people.

Number 9: When in doubt speak up or get a second opinion!
Many people I have seen have been misguided, mistreated and given bad advice and suffered the consequences. Instinctually these people may have felt what they were doing was not right for them, yet they went along with it because they see the person recommending it as an authority figure. Many problems and concerns can be resolved with open communication. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, share your concerns and be open to discussing things with your health care provider. Be informed and ask questions. This can prevent unnecessary surgeries, medications, contraindications and create peace of mind for you as well!

Number 10: An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!
Many of us put off getting our health issues checked until our health is on a downward spiral. Many wise people pop in for a check up once every six months, just to prevent illness. Often subtle imbalances in organ function are precursors to ill health and can be headed off at the pass well before it settles in. As mentioned earlier, one amazing way to check out nutritional imbalances, dysbiosis, liver stress and digestive issues is to have a live cell test done. Again, you can view a demo of live cell testing/darkfield microscopy on Youtube at www.youtube.com/watch?v=VvHOqEjG6a4.
