Heavy Metals, Have You Been Exposed?

Many of us do not think of heavy metal contamination as a possible health issue. We hear tell of those kids who ate lead-based paint from their window sill and assume we are safe because we don’t eat paint peelings! However, think again! We are exposed to heavy metals in our daily life. We are exposed from our food and water supply, direct exposure and the air we breathe. What we don’t excrete is stored in our body -- in our fat cells, brain, tissues -- and can cause other health concerns such as:

• Neurological: headaches, depression, poor memory, fatigue, vertigo, neuropathy, emotional instability, learning disabilities, ADHD, autism, Asperger’s syndrome, loss of touch, hearing and taste, headaches, tremors, chronic fatigue syndrome, numbness, manic behaviour, Alzheimer’s disease
• Cardiovascular: hypertension, heart failure
• Musculoskeletal: poor co-ordination, muscle weakness, bone density problems, low back pain, rickets
• Gastrointestinal problems: colic, metallic taste, constipation, irritable bowel syndrome
• Immune: poor immunity, immune suppression, frequent illness
• Kidney: kidney disorders
• Hormones: miscarriage, still births, infertility
• Respiratory: lung cancer, asthma, fibrosis
• Skin: dermatitis, hyper-pigmentation
• Other: low blood sugar, water retention, anemia

Sources of heavy metals are as follows:

• Aluminium: cooking utensils, foil, baking powder, antacids, medications
• Antimony: textile industry, medications, paint, glass, ceramics, solder, fire retardants
• Arsenic: wallpaper, some sea food, insecticides, fungicides, pressure-treated lumber, well water, smog, industrial exposure
• Beryllium: tobacco, lighting, coal, optic lens coating
• Cadmium: rubber, plastic, petrochemicals, batteries, tobacco, fertilizer
• Lead: paints, crystal glassware, water pipes, older house paints, pottery, cosmetics, metal polishing, manufacturing, hair dyes, smelting
• Mercury: dental amalgams, thermometers, barometers, batteries, vaccines, fungicides, pesticides, paint, all fish (especially large fish)
• Nickel: jewellery, zippers, eyeglasses, metal such as utensils, faucets, pins, wiring, wallpaper, pigments, margarine and some foods
• Tungsten: mining industry, metal working, petroleum, electrical appliances
• Uranium: ground water, root vegetables, fertilizers, some household dishes, household products

At the clinic, we have various tools for testing heavy metals. On occasion, we find that those who have a higher than normal heavy metal reading show a variety of symptoms. When you read the list of symptoms above, it is no wonder that people are not aware that they may have heavy metals. Most of us assume that we have to have symptoms of neurological impairment to be contaminated with heavy metals.

Homeopathic remedies have been found effective in inducing excretion of toxins into the urine. One study showed just that. Rats were poisoned with arsenic and given the homeopathic remedy Arsenicum Album 30 CH. Those who were administered the Arsenicum Album showed higher levels of arsenic being excreted through their urine.  Those who don’t understand homeopathy may think that is the remedy that is being excreted. However, when you take a remedy with a potency higher than a 12 CH, it has no physical molecules of the substance left. Homeopathic remedies have an energetic property that makes them effective.
