Surviving the Season
©Heather Caruso 2009

As many of us experience the shorter days and less sunlight, we may lose some energy to deal with our stresses. Sometimes a nice get away South for a week is enough to rejuvenate us. Sometimes we need more help in staying focused and balanced during this time of year. Stress has a direct impact on our health and well being. Here are some tips for living a happier life in 2009.

As we age our brain is less able to regulate hormone levels. That makes it important to regulate stress levels to prevent chronic high cortisol levels. The hippocampus which stores memories can be damaged from chronic high cortisol levels. Also our body’s normal biological response to stress like a high heartbeat, and an increase in blood pressure do not return to normal as quickly when we age. The impact of stress hormones is higher on women than on men. Counselling may be an option if you cannot control stress on your own. Here are a few suggestions on how to decrease your stress levels:

Make a list of the things you are thankful for and accentuate the positive.

Be assertive and positive instead of stressed and hostile whilst feeling pressured.

Keep your sense of humour, go to a funny movie, read positive literature and block out those negative messages

Get rid of negative friends. You cannot fly with the eagles when you are scratching with the turkeys.

Practice deep breathing techniques. Sit in a quiet spot and put your hand on your abdomen, feel it fill out with air.

Take up meditation. You don’t have to be a guru to experience the benefits of meditation. When you have a negative thought, just replace it with a positive one and try and quiet your mind.

Make up a positive mantra or sentence that reflects the life you want to already have. Put up copies of this throughout your home and say it to yourself repeatedly. One may be “I am happy with the my life and I accept happiness and fun into my life”

Cognitive therapy is a great counseling technique that helps one to recognize their negative thoughts they tell themselves. It can retrain you to put more positivity into your life starting with the words you use to speak to yourself.

Listen to relaxing music, read inspirational books and start a new and interesting project. Maybe you would like to renovate a room in your house dedicated to your creative talents. A music room, library, craft room or studio. The choice is yours.

Exercise your stress away try yoga, tai chi, pilates or swimming. Whatever fits your lifestyle and comfort level.

Avoid stress triggers such as nicotine or caffeinated beverages which impact the nervous system and decrease sleep.

Some people find that being intimate and enjoying sexual contact with their partner helps relieve stress. Sex helps to release feel good hormones like endorphins.

Treat yourself to some relaxing essential oils like lavender, rose, patchouli or sandalwood. Use them in a bath or get an essential oil diffuser.

Try journaling your challenges. Write down all of the options for conquering your challenge. List at least 25 solutions, sometimes the ones that come at the end are the best choices.

Try a stress clinic to be trained in feedback techniques to manage your feelings and situation.

The clinic has many useful tests to determine the biological affects of stress, such as a Koenisburg test or an EAV screening. Many natural remedies are useful to help combat high cortisol levels, sleeplessness and stress. If you haven’t been in for a while, you may think about coming in for a tune up to keep on top of things. As we all know, health problems can start with subtle shifts of energy and organ function and ill health can creep in.

As part of a health promotion, any new visits booked for the month of January, will receive a free live cell test. You must mention this newsletter when you call to book your appointment. You will find our office at 595 Woolwich Street at the corner of Ann and Woolwich, near the main intersection of Speedvale Avenue in Ann Street Family Chiropractic.
