Sitting too much is causing our health to decline

A good article by Chris Kresser.

There's no question that regular exercise is essential to health. For the vast majority of our evolutionary history, we've had to exert ourselves -- often quite strenuously -- to get food, find shelter and simply survive. We naturally spent a lot of time outdoors in the sun, walking, hunting, gathering, and performing various other physically-oriented tasks. We had no concept of this as "exercise" or "working out." It was just life. Read on

Research finds that a diet rich in healthy fats is actually good for your heart

A new study showcases that low-fat diets might not be the best diets for reducing the incidence of major cardiovascular events. A recently published study in the New England Journal of Medicine demonstrates that those that followed a Mediterranean diet, one rich in olive oil, nuts, beans, fish, fruits and vegetables, lowered their risk of heart attacks, strokes and deaths by 30 percent versus those that followed a low-fat diet. Similar to a Mediterranean diet, the Atkins Diet™ advocates a diet rich in vegetables, healthy fats like olive oil and avocado, protein, and after two weeks incorporates nuts and berries. As one approaches goal weight, beans and whole grains are introduced. The key difference for the Atkins Diet is that it controls carbohydrate intake as well, which may contribute to even better weight loss and improvement in heart health. Read on

Doctors Question Routine Use of Adult Antacid Drugs on Infants

Posted by Heather Caruso, This article was posted in Discussions
at Tue, January 08, 2013 00:00

Babies seem to be prescribed antacid drugs much more as of late. Several doctors are critical of their use. Often times the symptoms babies suffer from can be due to feeding positioning (lying down when the feeding takes place), over feeding (causing spit up) and food allergies. All of these conditions are not helped by antacid use. Doctors do not test babies for stomach acid which makes the use of antacids a poor choice. Antacids interfere with the absorption of minerals and vitamins. Here is an interesting article published in the Daily Mail, read on

European study investigating the links between diet and disease has found that people who consume more fruit and vegetables have a lower risk of dying from ischaemic heart disease – the most common form of heart disease and one of the leading causes of death in Europe. However, the authors point out that a higher fruit and vegetable intake occurs among people with other healthy eating habits and lifestyles, and that these factors could also be associated with the lower risk of dying from IHD. The study is published online today (Wednesday 19 January) in the European Heart Journal.

Interview with Bill Duesing, president, Connecticut chapter of the Northeast Organic Farming Association, conducted by Melinda Tuhus

A Sept. 4 headline in the New York Times read "Stanford Scientists Cast Doubt on Advantages of Organic Meat and Produce." The study cited was a meta-analysis of 40 years of research on organic and conventionally produced produce, that is, produce sprayed with pesticides. The study concluded that organic food was no more nutritious than non-organic. The research didn’t focus on questions of sustainability or even of flavor, though many people who responded to the article stated these issues were paramount in their decision to pay a premium price to buy organic food. In the news lately, one may have heard that a calcium supplements cause heart disease. That being said, it is true that taking the cheapest and most difficult to absorb form, calcium carbonate, alone without any co-factors does cause the excess calcium to deposit in tissues.
