Study on flavonoids and health benefits

Fruit and vegetables are rich sources of many vitamins and minerals. They also contain myriad other potentially health-promoting compounds called "phytochemicals," among which is a group of compounds collectively referred to as "flavonoids," sometimes called "polyphenols." Because flavonoids tend to be yellow, red, or blue, they tend to be found in brightly colored foods such as berries, citrus fruit, dark green vegetables, and red/purple grapes (and wine). They are also found in tea, cocoa, garlic, onions, nuts, and soy products. Many studies have found that increased consumption of certain flavonoids may lower the risk of cardiovascular disease, but how this may occur needs further study. Read on
