Doctors Question Routine Use of Adult Antacid Drugs on Infants

Posted by Heather Caruso, This article was posted in Discussions
at Tue, January 08, 2013 00:00

Babies seem to be prescribed antacid drugs much more as of late. Several doctors are critical of their use. Often times the symptoms babies suffer from can be due to feeding positioning (lying down when the feeding takes place), over feeding (causing spit up) and food allergies. All of these conditions are not helped by antacid use. Doctors do not test babies for stomach acid which makes the use of antacids a poor choice. Antacids interfere with the absorption of minerals and vitamins. Here is an interesting article published in the Daily Mail, read on

New study reveals that every single junk food meal damages your arteries

Posted by Heather Caruso, This article was posted in News/Research
at Fri, January 04, 2013 00:00

A single junk food meal – composed mainly of saturated fat – is detrimental to the health of the arteries, while no damage occurs after consuming a Mediterranean meal rich in good fats such as mono-and polyunsaturated fatty acids, according to researchers at the University of Montreal-affiliated ÉPIC Center of the Montreal Heart Institute. The Mediterranean meal may even have a positive effect on the arteries. The findings are being presented at the Canadian Cardiovascular Congress, which runs in Toronto until Wednesday, by the head of the study, Dr. Anil Nigam, Director of Research at the Cardiovascular Prevention and Rehabilitation Centre (ÉPIC) and associate professor at the university's Faculty of Medicine.

European study investigating the links between diet and disease has found that people who consume more fruit and vegetables have a lower risk of dying from ischaemic heart disease – the most common form of heart disease and one of the leading causes of death in Europe. However, the authors point out that a higher fruit and vegetable intake occurs among people with other healthy eating habits and lifestyles, and that these factors could also be associated with the lower risk of dying from IHD. The study is published online today (Wednesday 19 January) in the European Heart Journal.
