One Man's Food is Another Man's Poison

Many people are suffering with a variety of puzzling symptoms such as low energy, anemia, digestive upset, insomnia, depression, constipation, diarrhea and obesity and have become used to feeling under par. It is estimated that almost 50% of all people have some ongoing symptoms that make life less enjoyable. Don't give up hope yet, you may be suffering from food allergies. It can be very frustrating to try and isolate food allergies because symptoms may appear up to three days after consuming the food. Plus they may happen only at certain times of the year or when they are combined with other foods. A short list of symptoms caused by food allergies are as follows:

•Bladder problems such as recurrent infections and bedwetting
•Respiratory issues such as bronchitis, sinusitis, asthma, ear infections
•Gastrointestinal disorders like celiac disease, constipation, diarrhea, gas, bloating, heartburn, ulcerative colitis, crohn's disease, canker sores

•Mental and neurological conditions such as depression, anxiety, insomnia, dizziness, learning disabilities, ADHD, autism, headaches, irritability
•Skin conditions such as acne, skin rash, hives, eczema, itching
•Recurrent infection (various types)

Two types of antibodies are found when one is allergic to a food, IgE and IgG antibodies. IgE antibodies are formed immediately after the consumption of the food. These antibodies are linked to anaphalactic shock. IgG antibodies are related to delayed reactions to food, that may happen up to three days after it's consumption. Typical reactions are seen to foods like corn, soya, eggs, cane sugar, dairy products and gluten.

Those with many allergies may be suffering with low beneficial intestinal flora and a leaky gut. This causes the body to react to more foods because the food particles leak into the blood stream via these leaky junctions in the intestine and an immune complex is formed. Causes of leaky gut can be chronic stress, food allergies, prescription and illegal drugs, low beneficial flora, infectious illnesses and intestinal surgeries or procedures.

There are a number of supplements that target healing these leaky junctions such as L-glutamine and n-acetyl D glucosamine. Healing of the gut can take anywhere from 6 to 24 months depending on the severity of the case. It is of particular interest to keep the beneficial intestinal flora high, because 60 to 80 percent of our immune system is found in our gastrointestinal tract. Not only that most of our serotonin (our feel good hormone) and other neurotransmitters are formed in the gut. There are more neurotransmitters formed in our gut than in our brain. Thus you really are what you eat and don't excrete. Many people may notice if they don't eat a balanced diet, they will suffer more with insomnia, hormonal imbalance and depression.

Discovering your food allergies on your own can be difficult to figure out unless you are tested. Even an elimination diet may be complex to figure out. However, some people have success in doing so. Typically people remove common allergens for a period of a week. They re-introduce one food at a time, waiting for three days for any symptoms. If there are symptoms this food may be an allergen. Then re-introduce another food after the fourth day. Wait again to see symptoms. Do this with each food and record any symptoms that appear. Please note: If you are anaphalactic to foods, do not try re-introducing them into your diet. This would be a grave mistake. Seek professional medical help.

An alternative to this is having a quick lab test done for antibodies to foods. For our regular clients we offer a food sensitivity panel of 220 common foods. The cost is just the cost of the lab test fee and we do it to be of service to our regular clients. Regular clients means you have been to our clinic in the last six months. We also offer a few other tests for simply the cost of the lab, such as hair mineral analysis. If you are a practice member and are interested in food testing, please give the office a call or contact us.

Common Questions We are Asked in the Clinic

What do we think of organic food?

We are often asked if we personally eat organic food, why we think it is a good idea, and where we buy from. Good quality organic food is hard to come by in winter months. However some popular stores, such as Goodness Me, Wholefoods, Fiddleheads and even regular grocery stores carry a wider variety of organic foods. We think it is a good idea, due to the fact that pesticides have been linked to a number of diseases.

When choices are limited due to availability and cost, we try and shop for the dirty dozen in the organic department.

Healthy Hair and Nails

Often, especially our female clients wonder what they can do to improve the quality of their skin, hair and nails. Chemical processing of hair, blow drying and styling may leave hair dry and brittle. However, some things that are good for hair and nail quality are healthy fats, such as fatty fish, nuts, seeds, avocado and healthy fats such as coconut, organic olive or grapeseed oil. Hair may be falling due to a lack in a variety of minerals, such as zinc, calcium, silicea, iron, iodine, selenium, vitamin A, C, E, D and protein. Other issues such as stress, fasting and hormone imbalance can also trigger hair loss. One would need to determine what the nutritional concern is. Healthy skin is related to diet but as well in instances where the diet is right oftentimes homeopathy can help with issues like breakouts, eczema and tinea.

Can I give my friend my homeopathic remedy?

In some instances, sharing your remedies with friends are fine, especially if you have the Homeocan first aid kit and they have an acute injury. Arnica is great for speeding healing, calendula good for healing cuts. However, when the remedy is suited to your unique needs, for some particular condition, it doesn't typically work for someone else and is likely not harmful, however not recommended.
