The Medicinal Properties of Ashwagandha

The herb ashwagandha has a long history of use in Ayurvedic medicine. It’s other name is Withania Somniferum or Indian Ginseng. It is from the same family as the tomato and is a shrub up to 5 feet high. It bears yellow flowers and red fruit, but the fruits are smaller and more like berries than tomatoes are. This herb grows in hot climates like India, Sri Lanka and Pakistan. The name Ashwagandha means “horse’s smell” in Hindi and it not only refers to its smell but the strength that horse’s have and how the herb can impart additional strength and stamina on it’s user. This herb has been used for over 2500 years as an energy rejuvenator. It helps relieve fatigue, nervous exhaustion and memory loss. It is prevents sterility and improves male energy. It helps to reduce the activity of a busy mind and aids in a more sound sleep.

Ashwagandha increases energy and improves nervous exhaustion. In studies, lab animals had an increased tolerance to physical activity using this herb. It is often used in people with long periods of stress and helps to modify cortisol, a stress hormone, that causes symptoms like frequent waking at night, anxiety and irritability.

This herb has fantastic anti-inflammatory properties for people with joint problems. According to a study done by Anabalgan and Satidque in 1981, this herb has great benefit in rheumatoid arthritis. Studies found that ashwagandha has similar properties to synthetic steroid drugs like prednisone for controlling inflammation and pain. However, the herb does not decrease immunity or have multiple side effects like hydrocortisone or prednisone do. In one trial of 63 patients with arthritis and 46 with rheumatoid arthritis, researchers found that doses of 3 grams of ashwagandha per day for 6 weeks found that 22 percent of participants had a good response to the herb with decreased swelling, reduced pain and inflammation. 53 percent had a fair or moderate response and 3 percent had no response.

Ashwagandha helps to activate immune system cells, like lymphocytes, thus helping the immune system to ward off infectious agents like bacteria and viruses. Some research published in Life Sciences Journal by Luvuno in 2003 found that it can induce macrophages which means it creates immune cells that eats up bad bacteria, like staphylococcus aureus.

Ashwagandha has antioxidant properties. It reduces free radical damage especially in brain cells according to a study by Bhattacharya et al, posted in Phytotherapy Research journal in 1995. It can also improve mental cognitive performance in both healthy subjects and those with Alzheimer’s disease. It seems to improve memory by changing the way the brain uses a neurotransmitter called acetylcholine. It seems to alter its use in a way that protects the health of nerve cells in the brain that is related to memory and cognition.

This herb can help to increases hemoglobin, serum iron and other blood markers according to studies on children. Another study of healthy males found that after one year, hemoglobin and red blood cell counts improved. As well at least 70 percent of men found their performance in the bed room improved. Some of the participants noticed their hair colour return from gray due to an increase in melanin. In autoimmune disorders ashwagandha improves red and white blood cells that were dropping due to the use of immunosupressants or prednisone.

No side effects have been found in Ashwagandha but because no research has been done on pregnant or lactating women, it is advised to avoid this herb at that time. For more information on how we can help you, go to and book a free get acquainted chat today.

Keeping Your Immune System Strong and The Coronavirus

With all of the media attention on the latest virus outbreak that causes severe respiratory illness it is no wonder Canadians are searching for ways to keep their immune system boosted. First of all don't panic. Socially isolate, wash your hands and stay grounded. A lot of schools are offering free online learning, we can make crafts or read books. Call someone you have been meaning to! This too shall pass.

Many people are already suffering with typical winter infections such as colds, sinus infections and coughs. Here are five simple tips to keep your immunity humming and respiratory illnesses at bay.

     1. Avoid sugar and sweets. Sugar (cane, beet, succanat, turbinado, honey, agave, maple syrup) and refined carbohydrates (such as white flour, white rice) help viruses to take off in the body because microbes grow when they are fed simple sugars. This creates a toll on the immune system. If one eats too many sweets it also causes an imbalance in our natural flora found in our sinuses, lungs, gastrointestinal (GI) and urogental tracts. When our flora is imbalanced, it impedes our immune system because our GI tract holds three quarters of our lymphatic system, which is our main immune defence. You may notice that children that go to birthday parties or sleepovers and eat a lot of candy come home sick from eating sweets to their heart's content and lack of sleep.

     2. Consider using these particular probiotic strains, which target  respiratory viruses, called lactobacillus paracasei 8700 2 and lactobacillus planatarium HEAL 9, found in Ultra Flora Cold Control. Consumption of these probiotics decrease one's susceptibility to cold by 67% and reduced illness time by almost 25%

     3. Be sure to correct any nutritional deficiencies in zinc, vitamin D3 and vitamin C. These vitamins are excellent immune boosters. A typical dose of zinc is 15 mgs once or twice daily with meals. For vitamin D3, take 1000 up to 5000IU per day with a meal that contains fat to aid in absorption. Vitamin C dosage runs from 1000mgs to 5000mgs per day in divided doses. If you get loose stools cut the dose back as needed.

     4. Get proper sleep. When people are run down physically and emotionally due to stress and/or a lack of sleep, they are more susceptible to respiratory viruses. Some believe there are emotional triggers to health concerns and having cough or laryngitis is linked to stress where someone is unable to speak their truth. Be sure you make changes to your lifestyle that help you to minimize stress.

If that doesn't help your sleep, try some natural sleeping aids. Some herbs such as oatstraw, passionflower, valerian, chamomile or hops can be quite helpful. They are often found in over the counter sleepy time teas and don't have the list of dangerous side effects that prescription sedatives do. Calcium and magnesium are also beneficial for a relaxing sleep. Take these products an hour before going to bed.

     5. Herbs such as astragalus, cat's claw, black cumin sap, echinacea and mushrooms such as chaga, cordeceps, reishi and shitake all boost immunity.Try making a hot wild mushroom soup!

     6. In office we use homeopathic blends such as:

  • For immune boosting Caruso Lymph and Immune Lymph daily and thymuline once per week.
  • For flu symptoms, InfluMed.
  • For coughs and lung support, Caruso Pulmo
  • For sinus congestion, Caruso Sinus

Homeopaths have been discussing the COVID-19 and what remedies best address the symptoms of it. These have been the top ones discussed arsenicum album, justicia and gelsemium. Remedies are best matched to ones symptoms.Everyone is different and not one size fits all.

For all other issues, I recommend a tune up. If you would like more information on how we can help you, please contact us. We are doing telephone or skype chats for people at this time.

Top Questions During the COVID 19 Outbreak of Our Clinic

I am not a regular client and only have an acute problem, do you have a different rate for acute illnesses, colds, flu etc?

During the COVID outbreak we have extended our repeat visit rates to those with a virus, even if they are new to the clinic. This is an hour session for those with a cold, flu, ear ache, sore throat or even COVID symptoms.

However, if you are a new client with a chronic disease, you must book an initial appointment.

Has your clinic been exposed to COVID 19? No, my last in office client was over three weeks ago.

If I need your help can I still get it? Yes, we are still offering skype and phone chats. We have used skype with our long distance and US clients for years.

Can I pick up remedies? Yes we still arrange pick up for our clients. However, clients cannot pay using our debit machine, pay with cash or cheques. We only accept credit card or e transfer.

Can I order multiple of a remedy? The short answer is it depends on the remedy. Regular vitamins are easy to get but immune boosting herbs and vitamins are in high demand. We ask that people order one at a time so they do not create a shortage. If you have anything you want, just ask. Liquid alcohol based remedies are becoming limited to smaller sizes because there is a global shortage on alcohol right now. If you are taking any single homeopathic remedy from our clinic, we can easily make pellets or water potencies up for you.

If I get COVID can you help me? Our College of Homeopaths and worldwide homeopaths have come together to offer amazing information to support and help those during the COVID outbreak. Homeopathy has historically been very helpful, safe, powerful and effective in many of the epidemics of our time. This one is not different. If you have symptoms please don’t hesitate to book an appointment with us.

Can I pick up remedies from your clinic that I cannot get at the health food store? Our government regulated College of Homeopaths does not allow us to dispense to non-clients without taking their case for liability reasons. Our clinic doesn’t act like a health food store, where people shop and pick up remedies. If you see remedies mentioned on our page and are not a client you can hit your local health food store for it. We do take people’s cases and support them naturally should you want to book a tune up.

I have lost my job right now, can you still help me? We do offer compassionate care and shorter less expensive consultations for those who have an acute virus. Please contact us if you require help. Please note we are trying to prioritize cases for those who are in most need.

How can I help others during this time? If you would like to pay for someone else’s care or donate funds for people who are less fortunate to have homeopathic help it would be of great service to humanity. Please contact us for further information. Being a single person business, we ask for your support so we can carry on being of service to our community naturally. Bless you for considering it!
